“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes,” Pete said as he stared back at Mike for a beat longer than was probably absolutely necessary. “Seriously.”
Mike laughed and said, “Man, that is so completely lame.”
The sun rested lightly on the horizon. Billy adjusted his left hand on the neck, and then reached down with his right hand to double check the cable connection and took in a deep calming breath. The pleasant rumble of the assembling crowd drifted up to his ears on the warm summer breeze.
Sometimes he felt like this was the only moment that mattered, this was the moment for which he kept on living. He generally felt that right now, as he heard Petey off to the side swearing under his breath trying to get the generator to kick over, as Layla smiled sweetly at all the locals dropping off food and then finding a place to throw out a blanket on the thick grass.

It is funny how the Flaming Lips just kind of snuck up on me. I had never heard of them until the release of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots in 2001, and even then I only came across them on accident when the album was being streamed online by AOL in pre-release. The title completely caught me off guard and made me smile, which isn’t always an easy thing to do. And really, that in a nutshell has pretty much been my whole experiences with the band ever since – continually doing something that catches me off guard and makes me smile. I think I connect mostly with their music for their alternately goofy and wise lyrics and for their seemingly endlessly restless searching nature. And now I am a fan – as big a fan as I can be of anything, anyway…

Directed by wunderkind director Michael Bay (Armageddon), from a screenplay by Randall Wallace (Braveheart), Pearl Harbor is three hours of soft focus, earth tones and high octane CGI. It is loosely based on the true story of a big battle and the lives of some little people. Sometime in the 1900’s, which would be in the 20th century (I understand the math in that equation, but I still find it strange), there was a big war. This big war happened after an earlier big war, but before two smaller more politically incorrect wars (this of course does not include countless other wars that get little to no marketing attention from Hollywood).

(Editor’s note: My Grandfather died while I was on my mission for the LDS (Mormon) church in 1984. I re-typed up the original manuscript that he wrote when I was a child in 1977 (edited for him by my cousin Peggy Prentiss Tisher). I find his life reassuring to me when things seem tough, either professionally or interpersonally. I wish I could have had my Grandmother write her story before she passed away in the early spring of 2000, so that I could place it here with Granddad’s. – Ben)
